“Spirit of Discernment
Come into my heart tell me if this is real
Spirit of Discernment
Help me heal, help me deal”
dis·cern·ment /dəˈsərnmənt/
noun 1. the ability to judge well. "an astonishing lack of discernment”
Where are my Jill Scott fans at?! I love me some Jilly from Philly and if you’ve been around these Everyday Rae’ streets a while then you already know this as fact. Spirit of Discernment is most definitely inspired by her in concept. This song is basically the thought practice that occurs when you begin to slightly fall for someone. I, personally, pray for discernment in every step but this is a little different. The song is pretty much me describing a situation where I was getting to know a guy and I was feeling him, I was ’getting the feels’ lol. And I was mentally praying that I was doing the right thing. Praying for discernment to see what’s real and not what I feel.
I absolutely love the production on this track, it’s so groovy. I don’t know if I‘ve mentioned this already but my boyfriend and one of the greatest producers period, Jupyter, produced, mixed and mastered the entire ‘Transcend’ album. He’s amazingly gifted and I’m not just saying that because he’s my bf lol. The guy is gifted. He’s really the reason why there’s even a Rae’ LaShae the artist lol. But that’s a story for another day. It’s so funny because I remember when I initially recorded this song and I really hated it lol. We both were in the studio like nahhh. But it just wasn’t the right time.
I wrote this song a while ago also. Most of ‘Transcend’ was previously written and it just wasn’t the right time to release it. But I guess my Spirit of Discernment came in handy with that also because I couldn’t have thought of a better time to give yall ‘Transcend.’ So to wrap this thing up, if you don’t take anything else from this post, take this: In times of uncertainty, pray for discernment.
